Radical 方

方, originally a flag, serves as semantic or phonetic component. When it serves as a semantic component(radical), it stands to the left of the other part.

Characters composed of “方” have to do with “flag”. E.g.  旋, return, come back from the war (flag was used in a war); 施, originally flag, its meanings were extended to “wave, give, set up”; 族, clan (every clan has a flag); 旅, troops; etc.
